The Library’s Learning and Teaching team partners with academic staff to embed information literacy into topics to ensure students have the skills needed to succeed at university.
Our service model contains 2 streams – one for students and one for staff – and 3 tiers. The focus is to create and embed online learning resources that allow us to provide information literacy instruction to every student at Flinders University, regardless of whether they study on campus or online, in a way where they can revisit the information as they need. This is supported by services that enable staff and students to seek expert, personalised advice as needed.
1. Gateway of online resources
The top tier consists of online resources that students can use largely self-sufficiently.
These resources include a suite of FLO topics:
Systematic literature searching
Guides students through the process of engaging with literature, searching systematically for literature, designing a project and comprehensive searches, collecting and managing resources, and reporting the search methodology.
We also have a further suite of discrete resources and activities that help students learn both broad information literacy concepts and specific research skills.
All resources can be found through the Library’s Information Literacy Gateway. Students may seek these out via the Library’s Information Literacy Gateway, and teaching staff can embed relevant resources directly into their FLO topics.
2. Point of need online student group sessions
The second tier uses a flipped classroom approach, providing opportunities for students to ask questions of our team, but only after they have engaged with our learning resources.
This can include:
This would require advance notice to ensure staff availability.
3. Book a Librarian
If after these opportunities a student requires individual support, they can use the Book a Librarian service and attend a one-on-one appointment.
1. Gateway of learning plans and activities
The top tier consists of a repository of resources that teaching staff can use to plan how to teach information literacy within their topic.
These resources include:
Teaching staff can also draw from resources available via the Information Literacy Gateway for students.
2. Group sessions on embedding information literacy
The second tier consists of group training for teaching staff on principles and practices on embedding information literacy into topics or courses.
This may include:
Sessions will be available via iEnrol or as arranged by Colleges.
3. Resources and guidance for teaching staff
The third tier consists of support and advice for teaching staff on how to best integrate information literacy concepts and training into their topics or courses.
This can include:
New resources and activities can be developed where our current offerings are not suitable for purpose, however this would require a lead time of approximately 4 weeks. Where possible, resources will be created in a manner to support multiple purposes, to ensure greater reach and sustainability.
